Collage-ScholarshipChapter Scholarships

"Education costs money, but then so does ignorance." Sir Claus Moser

A significant number of students who attend Virginia State University hail from the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area (Washington, D.C., Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties of Maryland).

One of the primary goals of our Chapter is to provide financial support to as many area students that may be in need of financial assistance.  In light of our goals our chapter, over the years, has contributed thousands of dollars to VSU in support of area students who have desired to matriculate at our beloved Alma Mater.

In 2006, the Chapter gifted the University its largest single gift in Chapter history. This amount was $12,500 and was given in honor of the University's 125th Founding.  All prior years' gifts to the University have been in the amounts ranging from $5,000 to $10,000 in perpetual scholarship support.  Our efforts have had and will continue to have a profound effect upon the lives of so many students and we are very proud of our accomplishments.

Endowments Help The University Grow!

Building endowments is a top priority for the University.   Established endowments at the University help to provide continuous support into perpetuity, as they are invested for the long-term, rather than used as cash for immediate needs, and the earnings produced on the interest of the funds are used each year to help the University aim higher to achieve its educational mission more effectively .   Most endowments at the University carry the name of the donor or someone the donor wishes to memorialize or honor. The gift to create the endowment can be made from cash, stock, life insurance, real estate or other assets. Endowed gifts provide one of the most secure sources of future revenue for the University and is vital to its growth.

In 1998, the Washington, DC Chapter accepted the University's challenge by providing a $10,000 direct investment into the future of the University by establishing the Washington, DC Chapter/VSUAA Endowment Scholarship Fund, through the VSU Foundation, to help ensure the higher education dreams of VSU students from the Washington, DC metropolitan area. In May 2012, we were recognized by the VSU Development Office during the 2012 Alumni Weekend for our giving efforts toward our Chapter Endowment fund, that have totaled more than $53,000.00.

To assist in attracting the bes t and brightest students to the University, in 2005, the Chapter formally established the Washington, DC Chapter Provost Scholarship Fund, as a scholarship operating account with the VSU Foundation. This fund is used to help the University attract and provide scholarships to high school students from the Washington, DC metropolitan area who meet the criteria to receive the $3,500 Provost Scholarship. The amount and number of scholarships that are awarded by the University's Scholarship Committee is based solely on the amount the Chapter is able to give annually. Book Scholarships

According to a Government Accountability Office study, the prices for college textbooks have risen at double the rate of inflation for the past two decades. Each semester many students across the country are left to make a very important decision at their campus bookstore – buy their college textbooks or take a chance and not buy them. In Virginia, more than 40 percent of students surveyed by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia said they sometimes opt to do without buying their textbooks because of their high cost.

In response to this, the Chapter is committed to raising funds to assist in alleviating some of the financial burden associated with the high costs of college textbooks for VSU students who are from Washington, DC metropolitan area. For this reason, the Chapter's Book Scholarship program was established to target entering VSU freshman and those matriculating at the University who lack the funds to purchase their textbooks.

Each year, the Chapter strives to fund a total of four scholarships in the award amount of $500.00.  Our funding efforts are rendered in part from proceeds from our annual chapter fundraising events, annual membership dues, and individual contributions. However, our goal is to raise funds to purchase books for an entire year for selected students, and to have our book scholarship program become self-sustaining.
